New York Comicon

This coming weekend is the New York Comicon and Jessica and I will be doing a talk/workshop on Friday. We'll be talking about using comics in a variety of different classroom settings. If you're a teacher who's interested in incorporating comics into your classes at whatever level I encourage you to drop in. Here's the description from the program schedule:

Friday, 2-3 PM, Room 1A23

Jessica Abel and Matt Madden, instructors at the School of Visual Arts and creators of the comic textbook Drawing Words & Writing Pictures, talk about how to use comics in the classroom in this presentation aimed at English and Art teachers. Discussing techniques for reading and analyzing comics as well as creating them, Jessica and Matt will lead teachers to a better understanding of the comic medium that will empower them to make use of comics in new and exciting ways.

At 3:15 we'll be signing books at the First Second booth. Read more...

New Semester at SVA; Open House Tuesday 1/6 at 6:30PM

Happy New Year everyone!

School is gearing up again and I will be teaching once more in the Continuing Education division of the School of Visual Arts. This semester I'll be teaching one class and one seminar. The class is called
Comics Storytelling and I've been teaching it for a few semesters now. I always get an interesting and dedicated group of people in these classes and they're a lot of fun to teach.

In fact, Tom Hart and I have had so many students who've taken both our classes and are still hungry for more that we've come up with a new project we're offering for the first time this semester. It's called Indepenent Projects Seminar: Comics and it will meet three whole days spread throughout the semester. The idea is that experienced students or practicing cartoonists can concentrate on a long project and spend most of their time working on it alone (which is mainly what you do as a cartoonist!) but have periodic crits and access to me and Tom throughout the semester. I'm looking forward to the conversations and work that will come out of it.

[not actually SVA, this is me teaching the marvels of the brush basin at PNCA in Oregon last summer. Many of these students went on to put out an anthology which is debuting around now--more to come on that soon.]

If you want to learn more, please come to the Open House tomorrow where I'll be showing some slides of student work and talking about my classes.
