Writer/Reader Mingle & Book Swap

Next Monday evening, March 30, I'll be dropping by Pacific Standard at 82 4th Ave in Park Slope for an event organized by a group of librarians calling themselves the Desk Set. It's a book swap and social event and it's open to everyone. Other cartoonists attending include Gabrielle Bell and Sara Varon, who created the flier above. Also lots of NYC literary luminaries and librarians.

I hope you'll say hi if you see me there. Read more...

Keynote Talk in Gainesville, Saturday March 21

I'll be giving a slideshow talk at The University of Florida's 7th annual comics conference, "Convergences: Comics, Culture and Globalization," in Gainesville FL on March 21 at 3:30PM. It's open to the public if you're in the area.

Since there is a cross-cultural and specifically French theme to the conference, I am putting together a slideshow talk called "How Hergé and Raymond Queneau Made Me a Cartoonist" where I'll talk about how French comics and culture have influenced my art in ways deeper than I sometimes realize.

(from Odds Off, 2001)

I'll also be doing a library workshop and a few school visits on Thursday and Friday so check your local listings or contact me via comments and I'll try to get you the info if you're interested. Read more...

Neunundneunzig Luftballons in Strapazin

My high school German is a little rusty but I think "Luftballons" means "Exercises in Style" ...no, wait, maybe it was something about red balloons?

Anyway, I'm very pleased to announce that my Jack Kirby homage from 99 Ways to Tell a Story is on the cover of the new issue (#94) of the very excellent Swiss comics magazine, Strapazin.

Better yet, inside you'll find a selection of the book translated in to German by Christian Gasser. I haven't received my copy yet and I can't wait for it to show up in the mail. These guys always do a great job. Read more...
